Treatment Comparison

Lumineers vs. Traditional Porcelain Veneers

Both go on the front of your teeth and both are porcelain. The real difference is how much natural tooth is prepared first — which decides how reversible the treatment is and which smiles it suits.

We offer both traditional porcelain veneers and Lumineers, which puts us in a position to be straightforward about something the marketing around minimal-prep veneers tends to blur: they are not simply a newer, better veneer. They are a thinner one, and thinness is an advantage in some mouths and a limitation in others.

The question that decides between them is how much natural tooth structure has to be reduced to make the result look right. That depends on the shape and position of your teeth, not on which product you have read more about.

Side by side

AspectLumineers (minimal-prep)Traditional porcelain veneers
Tooth preparationVery little, and in some cases none. This is the central selling point and the central constraint.A thin layer of enamel is reduced so the veneer sits flush and looks natural.
ReversibilityBecause little or no enamel is removed, the treatment is often described as reversible — though removing them is still a dental procedure.Once enamel is reduced, the tooth will need a covering from then on. This is the part worth thinking hardest about.
Thickness and bulkThinner, but sitting on an unreduced tooth can add a little bulk. On already-prominent teeth this can read as noticeable. The preparation makes room, so the finished surface sits closer to the original contour.
Masking dark teethLess able to hide significant discoloration, because a thinner porcelain layer is less opaque.Better at covering darker or heavily discoloured teeth.
Correcting shape and alignmentWell suited to smaller corrections and modest reshaping.More scope for changing shape, closing larger gaps, and evening out an uneven smile line.
Appointment sequenceOften fewer preparation steps and sometimes no temporaries.Typically preparation, temporaries, then placement — with try-in stages in more involved cases.
Comfort during treatmentLess preparation often means less sensitivity afterward. Some temporary sensitivity after preparation is common while the temporaries are in place.

Which tends to fit whom

Lumineers (minimal-prep) often fits…

  • Your teeth are reasonably well aligned and not significantly discoloured
  • Keeping natural tooth structure intact is your priority
  • You are making a modest change rather than redesigning the smile
  • You want a treatment that can more realistically be undone

Traditional porcelain veneers often fits…

  • Teeth are noticeably discoloured and need real masking
  • Shape, spacing, or the smile line need meaningful correction
  • Teeth sit prominently, where added bulk would be obvious
  • You want the most control over the final contour
Common Questions

Questions patients ask

Are Lumineers just a brand of veneer?

Lumineers is a brand name for a minimal-preparation porcelain veneer. The meaningful distinction is not the brand but how much tooth preparation the treatment requires — which is what actually changes your options later.

Which lasts longer?

Longevity depends more on your bite, habits like grinding, and gum health than on which type you choose. Neither is permanent, and both eventually need attention.

Can I have Lumineers if my teeth are quite dark?

Sometimes, but it is exactly where the thinner porcelain is at a disadvantage. We would rather tell you that at a consultation than have you disappointed by the shade afterward.

How do I know which one my teeth need?

A cosmetic consultation. We look at tooth position, shade, your smile line, and your bite, then explain what each option would realistically achieve for your teeth specifically.
